Rockies Win Road Opener at Milwaukee, 5-3 behind Jimenez

Carlos Gonzalez had had an eventful day. He notched 4 singles,
played 3 positions, scored 2 runs, got caught stealing and grounded into a double play.
Colorado used 6 pitchers to the Brewers 2. Their number 2 hitter, Seth Smith, struck out
3 times and hit into a double-play. Tulowitzki at short and Stewart at third
both had errors, and the pitching 6-pack gave up 12 hits, 2 walks, a pair
of wild pitches, and a hit batsman, yet still held the opponents to just 3 runs.
Franklin Morales, the de facto closer, nursing a three run lead, had a wild
pitch, hit a batter, and gave up a hit and a run. Still, with the help of some amazing
defensive plays in the ninth by Tulo and Barmes, the Rockies managed to hold
on for the win in their first game of 2010. Hurray!

The Colorado Rockies will definitely not play in the 2010 World Series. The Denver Baseball Observer knows this because Tony’s New York Pizza store near the corner of Mississippi and Wadsworth has painted a sign on their window guaranteeing free pizza for all if the Rockies make the World Series in 2010. Last year, they promised the same deal when the Chicago Cubs made the World Series. You do the math.

Since We Last Talked - Big Changes in RockiesWorld

The last time the Baseball Observer set fingers to keyboard, the Rockies had clinched the 2009 NL Wildcard and had a chance to win the West Division championship for the first time by sweeping a three game set from the Dodgers in LA. Well, they didn't make it, and as the Wildcard, they did not show up in the first round series against the Phillies, splitting the first two games on the road, then losing two in a row at MillerCoors field to be eliminated.
Since the season ended, they lost their radio voice from the beginning in 1993, Jeff Kingery, supposedly because he wanted to retire. As fans may recall, Kingery had some kind of blowup late in the season and lost favor with the club, which may have caused his retirement to be less than voluntary. The guy had an irritating voice and talked fast and furiously, but he knew baseball and created an accurate image of game play with his descriptions. The Baseball Observer usually turned of the sound of the TV broadcasters and listened to Kingery instead, which made the game much more enjoyable.
As far as players go, Garret Atkins, Yorvit Torrealba, Josh Fogg, Jose Contreras, Matt Herges, Joe Beimel, and Jason Marquis are gone. Miguel Olivo has apparently been signed to replace Torrealba. With the return of Jeff Francis and the coming of age of several young starters, coupled with the returning hitting nucleus, the Rockies management is confident that they will contend for the World Series in 2010. Unfortunately, they made the playoffs last year and they have never done that two years in row, so the odds are against 2010 being a good year for the Colorado entrant in the Major Leagues of Baseball.

Tulo Needs Anger Management
Rockies’ Win Streak Ends at 6 – Second Loss in 19 Games

Wednesday, June 24, 2008. Troy Tulowitzky lost his temper last night, and the result wasn’t pretty. Just because the burly Los Angeles right-hander chucked a fastball behind his head, Tulo destroyed two perfectly good baseballs and nearly injured several innocent fans in the seats beyond the outfield fences in fair territory. It took two consecutive at bats for him to vent by driving balls out of the playing field before the lanky shortstop finally cooled down, salved, no doubt by the 3-2 lead he had given his team over the homestanding Angels.
He is probably angry again this morning, though, because his neighbor to the right, Ian Stewart, committed two gaffs at third base in the 8th inning, allowing Los Angeles to take a 4-3 lead that ended up being the final tally. Mr. Tulo did not have the opportunity to work out his rage in the ninth, as former teammate Brian Fuentes closed out the Rockies before Troy could get to bat again. They had better walk him today if his mood hasn’t improved.
Colorado will try to start a new streak tonight, and continue the miraculous play precipitated by the firing of incompetent manager Clint Hurdle. The announcers at last night’s game, declared that the Rockies’ 17-2 streak was the best in the last 40 years. The Baseball Observer will have to check that statement, however, because those guys are seldom correct in their pronouncements.
They were right about one thing, though. It must be frustrating for that team to know that in spite of record streak, they have only gained a half game on the Dodgers, and are still 10 games back.

Eight on the road, and now three in a row at home. The Rockies
have now tied their all time win streak set during those surreal final days of
the 2007 season. Sunday's game was a laugher, although the fans got a scare
from a 55 minute tornado-warning delay. Starter Jason Hammel only worked
into the sixth due to the weather delay, but Josh Fogg, Allan Embree, and
Peralta combined to hold the American League Seatle Mariners to 1 run on 6
hits, while the Rox piled up 14 hits while crossing the plate 7 times. Now,
will they be able to break the record against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday?

The Rockies are Rolling under new manager Jim Tracy!
Aaron Cook continued his resurgence as Colorado squeeked by the Milwaukee
Brewers, 6-5, in spite of Huston Street's breakdown in the ninth. Catcher
Paul Phillip's two-run single in the 8th proved to be the winning margin
when Street got the save in spite of yielding a three-run homerun in the
game's final frame. All 8 of the consecutive wins have been on the road,
giving the Rockies a winning record of 19-18 away from Denver, and tying
a record set in 1997. They will have to wait until a Monday, June 22nd game
in Los Angeles against the Angels, to see if they can break the record.
Meanwhile, it's back home to play the Mariners, Rays, and Pirates.

Mike Pelfry quieted Colorado's bats and knocked in the only run he would need as the Mets improved to 3-6 on the season while the Rockies fell to 5-4. The vaunted Rockies offense only managed 5 singles, 2 of them infield hits, against Pelfry and no hits at all against New York bullpen artists Pedro Feliciano and Francisco Rodriguez. Colorado's usually-dependable starter, Jorge De La Rosa, had a miserable day, including 5 walks and two wild pitches. He later admitted "Nothing was working." The Home Team's fielding took a vacation as well, as they allowed Pelfry to break out a rundown between 3rd base and home to score in the third inning. Pelfry was on base courtesy of a walk. Maybe the Rockies were looking forward to Friday night's game at first place Atlanta, with their rookie right field sensation, Jason Heyward.
